Chapter 17

Riley nodded, not sure where this was going. She found herself now wanting to know next why he liked her—if they were asking deeper questions than they had been.

But what he said was, “There are a few things that I need to know aren't the reason.”

Riley had no clue what was next, so she asked, “What are they?”

“My parents? My family name? Women have dated me in the past to try to get into the Mayfair family. I mean, if that's what you want, there are better routes . . .” He paused and thought, “My cousin Jackson needs a wife. Charlie’s never home, so he’d make a great husband if you wanted the Mayfair or Weaver name.”

He may or may not have been sarcastic, but Riley laughed anyway. Maybe it was partially relief that it wasn’t anything she couldn’t answer. She took another bite of her chicken and Spanish rice. “I'm not from this town. I don't need to be a Weaver or a Mayfair. You can check that one off of your list.”

He nodded. “Good. The other one I need to know is the money. I know my mother likes to tell everybody how much money I made and I've been dated for it in the past.”

“Oh.” Riley felt her mouth go round at the statement. It made sense, and he wasn’t wrong. How much money he had made was one of the first things Westerley had told Riley about her son. She’d not considered it before, but she could see that might be a problem for him. “Christian. It's not the money. I really don't care about the money. I have enough to pay my bills. I worked hard for it. And I like paying my own bills. There were times I wasn’t sure I’d make that goal, and it feels good.” She held her glass up, the second brand of cider sloshing a little as she gestured to the room. “I bought this place. No co-signer. It’s all mine and I’m proud of that.”

“I wasn't trying to insult you. I know that I'm smarter than the average person. I know that I make more money than the average person. I own a home that I paid cash for. I just don't want that to be a reason. I know a lot of women are looking to get married and have kids and have everything set up and . . . I just want you to be here for me.” He took a breath and she could tell he was waiting on her response.

That was Christian: always raw, always real. Which might be what she liked about him best. “Christian, I didn’t take it as an insult. And you're right, those things might be an obstacle.” He hadn’t said it in arrogance. He stated it as a fact, and she liked that. He didn't say he was rich—apparently, whatever his standards were, he wasn't there yet. But it was true, if Westerley was correct, that he had more money than the average guy in Breathless, then he might want to worry about it.
